I didn’t want to like Mikhail, but he was already on the phone with the local PD by the time I returned. He held up a finger for me to wait and finished his call.

“Feds know what’s happening. I called in to my team and made a call to Scarlett’s. I know Callahan would never forgive me if something happened to Scarlett on my watch. The locals should be en route by now. Town’s too small to have PTF unit, but they are willing to let us help until Feds can arrive.”

“How’d you convince them to let us help?” I stepped over the body and began packing my belongings.

“Stop. They think we’re here on assignment due to the increased attacks. My team is watching my back, and Callahan was going to have McIntyre make calls to vouch for you and Scarlett. Tie this incident to the case in New York.” He has already had time to dress and put on shoes.

I pulled a shirt over my head. “Scarlett can’t be here when they arrive though. Nigel suspects the baby will arrive sooner than we thought, and we can’t risk Muldoon’s people finding them.”

“Agreed. So we’ll have to work together to get this done.” He stepped into the room and closed the door as far as possibly while I finished dressing. “Did Nigel tell you about the vial Scarlett’s attacker gave her?”

My heart sank. “No.”

“And I suppose she didn’t mention it either?”

My shoulders slumped. Adding insult to injury seemed to be the theme of my days now that the Alpha and joined out many bands of bloodsuckers. “Just tell me what I should know.”

“Whomever attacked her gave her a vial of something and told her to use it when the time came. The results that Nigel got weren’t just Scarlett’s labs. There was also a sample tested on the liquid inside. I had money on it being another vial of serum 76, but it wasn’t. It was an herbal mixture of things meant to induce labor. I don’t remember all the herbs and roots he mentioned but he was worried that the nurse who took Scarlett’s labs may have also injected her with a dose of it.

“She had been discovered trying to take some of Scarlett’s blood vials. And under questioning said someone paid her to get some of the pregnant vampire’s blood. They had threatened her child and gave her a vial of something to inject Scarlett with.

“Apparently, she feared enough for her family’s welfare that she figured if one vampire wanted to take out another, or two, in the case of Scarlett and the baby, she wasn’t going to get in the middle of it.”

I began to pace. “So how many doses of this has she had already?”

“Nigel is concerned that her attacker may have dosed her, plus the nurse, and if she’s out there alone with only Nigel and Lauren to protect her, who knows what could happen.”

My muscles ached to run after Scarlett and not let her out of my sight.
